Everyday Makeup Routine

the secrets out.

I've been a makeup fan for as along as I can remember. The fascination started when I was a curious five year old, staring at my mom through the bathroom mirror as she did her morning routine. She only wore MAC, used Channel brushes (that I would later "borrow" in middle school, break, and proceed to superglue back together), loved a brown lipliner, and insisted that mascara was non-negotiable.

After a few years of watching her 10 minute transformation, I wanted in, and I wanted all of it. The foundation, the liner, the mascara.. the big kid stuff. Despite my constant begging for a full kit
my mom insisted that third graders should enjoy their natural face, and bought me a $1 lip gloss from the beauty supply store instead.

It was cherry scented, sticky, and fit perfectly in my tiny sequin purse. I loved it, cherished it really, and maintained that its clear/pink hue was flattering on everyone that I forced to try it. Fast forward 16ish years and I'm still filling purses with lipgloss, looking for the next best mascara, and bestowing my makeup tips on people who didn't ask for it.

And so, this is what brings me here today. A now 21 year old woman/child who's still a fan of a good makeup routine.

Here's how I make my face look like my face. Sticky cherry lipgloss not included :)

Step 1: Hydrate + Prime

  • Over the years my skin has become more and more finicky, shifting from oily to dry, and now settling on an awkward combination of the two. My t-zone is shiny but the areas around my mouth and eyes tend to dry out. Without the proper base this becomes a battle-zone for any foundation. To balance it out, my number one rule is always moisturize the skin before putting anything on top of it. First I prep my skin with a couple drops of Vitamin E Oil (face and lips). After that, I like to apply a littttleee bit of pore filling primer to smooth everything out.

Step 2: Brows

  • I went far too long without grooming my bushy brows, so, to compensate I always do them first. I like to keep the brows simple, filling them in lightly with a pencil and locking that in with a clear gel.

Step 3: Foundation + Concealer

  • My mothers advice to love your natural face has always stuck with me. I personally prefer a more natural finish, and tend to reach for a lightweight foundation paired with a high coverage concealer. The Fenty foundation is the best shade match I've found so far and their concealer covers up dark circles like a pro.

Step 4: Bronze + Blush

  • This step is arguably the most important, because it brings your face to lifeeee. I typically reach for warmer tones to bring some color back to my skin, and avoid the organic egg look that haunted my youth. To make a long story short, if I'm wearing foundation, I'm wearing bronzer/blush. That's just how it goes.
Step 5: Eyes

  • I wear glasses everyday so I like to keep the eyes relatively simple. First I take my bronzer and fluff that into the crease with an eyeshadow brush, then I do the same thing with my blush, sometimes I'll add a flick of liquid liner for a hint of drama, but no matter what I always end with mascara.
Step 6: Lips

  • This is where things get fun! I tend to play with my lip color the most, flipping between clear gloss, red tinted things, and nude lip colors. However, my favorite product of the moment is a newbie in my collection. The "Absolute New York" Supreme Slim Lustre Satin Lipstick in Chocolate kiss is a recent beauty supply find, and a close second to my beloved cherry glaze. It's sheer but not too sheer, nude but also red, and only $5. If you see it get it!

Until next time
